Grant applications - Call for 2007
The Fondation Alliance BioSecure ("Biosafety Alliance Foundation") is pleased to announce a Call for Grant Applications for research projects on biosafety related to prion diseases as well as diseases caused by other emerging pathogens.
Scope
In line with the mission of the Foundation, priority will be given to projects related to prion diseases; however, projects addressing pathogens other than prions can be considered for funding if relevant to current public health risks.
The awards to be made for the funding year 2007 should address one or more of the following topics:
- Prion characterization, detection, pathogenesis, and therapeutics .
For example, characterization of the infectious agent in blood and other tissues
- Methods to remove or destroy potential contaminants in the production of biological products.
For example, innovative approaches or mechanisms for prion inactivation or removal
- Methods to remove or decontaminate instruments/surfaces with respect to prions.
- Surveillance and epidemiology of prion diseases and diseases caused by other relevant emerging pathogens.
Grant applicants should be aware that the Foundation will make available its own research facility to the selected projects. The list of major equipment of the Foundation laboratories, available for use at a BSL-3 biosafety level (NeuroPrion Research Platform, Paris), includes in particular :
- Threelaser Influx cell sorter with scatter/fluorescent detectors
- PMCA automates (sonicators)
- Centrifuges and ultra-centrifuges
- Animal care facilities

Time schedule
- Call Opening: 5 April 2007
- Call Closing: 1 June 2007
- End review: 1 September 2007
- Grants awarded: 1 October 2007
Total annual amount of grant money: 400,000 euros.
It is expected that most grants will be 1-year awards, but exceptionally, longer term grants will be considered.

- Relevance vs scope of the present call for proposal
- Innovation & scientific excellence of the project
- Team expertise in the field
- Feasibility and concordance of timelines with project's objectives.

Application
A single letter of intent (see attached template) of the proposed project is requested, including estimation of its duration and cost.

Letters of intent will be evaluated by the Foundation Scientific Advisory Committee by June 30th, 2007.
If found suitable, a full application form will be then requested by the Advisory committee.
