Appels d'offres - Call for 2008
The Fondation Alliance BioSecure ("Biosafety Alliance Foundation") is pleased to announce a Call for Grant Applications for research projects on biosafety related to prion diseases as well as diseases caused by other emerging pathogens.
Total amount granted: 450,000 euros
Scope
In line with the mission of the Foundation, priority will be given to projects related to protein misfolding diseases, especially prion diseases; however, projects addressing pathogens other than prions can be considered for funding if relevant to current public health risks.
Awarded projects for the funding year 2008 may address any aspect of the protein misfolding disease family including, but not limited to:
- Elucidation of the misfolding process; characterization of the mechanics of the molecular transformation ; elucidation of the relationship of the misfolded protein and its molecular intermediates to the manifestations of disease ;
- Research, development or validation of methods to detect prions (and other misfolded proteins) in human or animal biological fluids & organs ;
- Methods to remove or destroy potential contaminants in the production of biological products, or to remove or decontaminate instruments/surfaces (prions and related agents) ;
- Surveillance and epidemiology of prion diseases.
Grant applicants should be aware that the Foundation will make available its own research facility to the selected projects. The list of major equipment of the Foundation laboratories, available for use at a BSL-3 biosafety level (NeuroPrion Research Platform, Paris), includes in particular :
- Three-laser Influx cell sorter with scatter/fluorescent detectors
- PMCA automates (sonicators)
- Centrifuges and ultra-centrifuges
- Animal care facilities
- Inverted confocal microscope with thermostatic chamber

Time schedule
- Call Opening: 15 April 2008
- Letters of Intent: Call Closing 15 May 2008
- Notification of Selected Projects for Full Grant Applications: 15 June 2008
- Deadline for receipt of Full Grant Applications: 15 July 2008
- Grants awarded: 9 October 2008 (Prion2008 meeting in Madrid)
Total annual amount of grant money: 450,000 euros.
It is expected that most grants will be 1-year awards, but exceptionally, longer-term grants will be considered.

Eligibility Criteria
- Relevance vs scope of the present call for proposal
- Innovation & scientific excellence of the project
- Team expertise in the field (both academic & Industrial teams can apply)
- Feasibility and concordance of timelines with project's objectives
European teams, as well as non-European ones, can apply. Collaborative projects are welcomed.

Application
A single Letter of Intent (see attached template) of the proposed project is requested, including estimation of its duration and cost.

Letters of intent will be evaluated by the Foundation Scientific Advisory Committee by June 15th, 2008.
If a project is selected for further evaluation, a full Grant application will then be requested by the Advisory Committee by July 15th 2008.
